MINDFUL MISSIONS: Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month

Written by MOSH Life

Mindful Mission #4

Write a letter to your future self

Writing stimulates the right side of the brain, the part responsible for creativity, imagery, music awareness, imagination, and intuition.

For Mindful Missions #4, take 15-20 minutes or so to write a letter to your future self. Imagine it’s 5 years in the future—this is the amount of time in which meaningful life change happens.

  • Where do you want to be?
  • What changes do you want to make?
  • What goals do you have for yourself?

This process is about reflecting on the present and thoughtful rumination on the future.

According to a research study published in the “Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition,” writing can help increase mental clarity. The study found that when participants wrote about their thoughts and feelings on a given topic for 20 minutes, they had better mental clarity than those who did not write.

Use it or lose it: exercise your mind to stay sharp

People who continue learning new things throughout life and challenging their brains are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, so make it a point to stay mentally active.

MINDFUL MISSION #3 will provide a great mental workout with brain boosting activities that will stimulate your mind and help keep you sharp. It's smart to vary your habits regularly to create new brain pathways and a greater amount of protection against cognitive decline.

Mindful Mission #2

Give thanks and help others to boost brain health

People that help others and those who appreciate the small things in life are happier, healthier, and make better progress toward achieving goals—there’s science to prove it too!

That's why Mindful Mission #2 is all about practicing gratitude and giving back.

Research suggests focusing on gratitude helps to calm the deep limbic areas and enhance other judgment centers in your brain. Not only that, but brain scans studies indicate random mindful “acts of kindness” or altruistic behavior help to release endorphins—hormones that promote feelings of pleasure, positivity, and happiness. That’s why it feels just as good to give as it does to receive!

Mindful Mission #1

Healthy eating habits backed by brain science

Mindful Mission #1 is all about practicing mindful eating habits. We think everyone can agree by now that crash diets don't work when it comes to achieving long-term brain+body health.

That's why many leading researchers are encouraging a better approach to healthy eating based on brain science. In fact, a Brown University study found that mindfulness training reduced craving-related eating by 40 percent.
