Nutrition has a huge effect on all of your bodily functions — and that’s where MOSH comes in. Components of a Healthy Brain
First off, why is it even important to have a healthy brain? We’re glad you asked. It’s important to help prevent diseases (such as Alzheimer’s and dementia), to maintain memory, support your mental health and emotional well-being, and keep your entire body functioning properly. There are many components of what makes a brain healthy. We refer to these components as pillars, because they help to uphold and maintain your cognitive function. While there are seven pillars in total, we like to focus on three of them to help you prioritize and know where to start when it comes to making small yet sustainable changes. This is where the BFF Guide steps in — it’s here to help you stay on track, give you nutritional tips, tricks for simplifying your health goals, and so much more.
Nutrition
The first pillar is nutrition. What we put into our bodies plays a huge role in our health — from our brain to our mental health, to our physical health, and everything in between. Plus, there’s a direct connection between nutrition and the brain-gut axis (two-way signaling between your gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system).
A happy gut also equals a happy brain, and vice versa. When you eat foods that are high in vitamins, antioxidants, and other nutrients, it helps to protect your brain from oxidative stress and assists with cellular repair. Nutrient-rich foods also help you focus, stabilize your mood, and improve your overall brain function.
Movement
The second pillar is movement. Physical activity is so important for our cognitive function. Consistent physical activity can:
- Alleviate depression and anxiety
- Improve memory
- Increase neuroplasticity
- Reduce your risk of cognitive decline
Did you know that one study found that cognitive decline is almost twice as common among inactive adults compared to those who are active? Find a workout or form of exercise that you love and want to keep up with. Even walking daily can help maintain your brain health and is a great place to start.
Sleep
The third essential pillar is sleep. Our bodies and minds simply couldn’t function without it. When we go to sleep, the body can repair, recharge, and recover; it’s scientifically proven to improve memory, regulate our metabolism, and reduce mental fatigue.
A chronic lack of sleep or poor sleep can significantly increase your risk of developing dementia or Alzheimer’s. Aim for 6-8 hours of restful sleep each night so your body has time to heal.
